He is also actively involved in his community through his church and has served on the school board. In 1992, he became Board Certified in Civil Trial Law, distinguishing himself as one of less than 2% of The Florida Bar specializing in civil trial law, which includes personal injury and medical malpractice. In 1999, he was chosen to serve on The Florida Bar Civil Trial Law Certification Committee. This committee is entrusted with evaluating and testing other lawyers who wish to hold themselves out as specialists in Civil Trial Law. From 2002 through 2004, Anthony was honored to serve as Chair of this Florida Bar Committee. Anthony attended Suffolk University Law School in Boston, served as a writer and editor of its Law Journal, and graduated in 1984. He became a member of The Florida Bar in 1984 and The Massachusetts Bar in 1985. Michael Beckman is a partner with Viles & Beckman, LLC. His area of practice concentrates on protecting the rights of injured accident and prescription drug defect victims. He is licensed to practice in all Florida state courts and the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, and has successfully tried numerous cases at trial. He has obtained some of the largest judgments in the state of Florida of 35 and 40 million dollars. In this interview, he discusses his work in the case of Schwartz v. English, where Sally Schwartz, 42, a medical assistant, was driving her Kia sedan on Pine Island Road just east of Pondella Road in Cape Coral, Florida. Steven R. English, 41, in a Mazda sedan, was going about 70 mph in a 45-mph zone when he slammed her car in the rear, causing Schwartz’ vehicle to roll over several times. She was rushed to a hospital and is now paralyzed. English fled the scene and made it all the way home. However, because he had cuts on his face, his wife called for an ambulance. Emergency medical technicians arrived, followed by the police. English told conflicting stories: After telling paramedics that he drank five beers prior to driving, he told police that he only drank three beers. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. The arrest report indicated a blood alcohol level of more than twice the state’s legal limit of .08. He was convicted of driving while intoxicated and served time in jail. Prior to the accident, he had been arrested three times for driving on a suspended license and had served jail time for a 1994 offense. Michael is also an active member in his community. Currently, he sits on the Church Council at Christ Lutheran Church. He is a member of the Florida Justice Association, the Lee County Bar Association, and the American Association for Justice. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida in 1993, and his Juris Doctor from Texas Wesleyan School of Law in 1997. Roger Clark is the founding member and managing partner of Clark, Goldberg & Madruga www.clarkgoldberg.com.
