Jeff Shesol is a distinguished historian and the author of Supreme Power and of Mutual Contempt, a study of Lyndon Johnson and Robert F. Kennedy.
In his latest book, Supreme Power: Franklin Roosevelt vs. The Supreme Court, Jeff describes how, when the Court’s conservative majority knocked down the pillars of the New Deal, one after another, democracy itself stood on trial. If Franklin Roosevelt was going to have any hope of changing America, he would have to find a way to overcome the Court. In 1937, he struck back with an audacious plan to pack the Court with liberals. The ensuing fight was a partisan firestorm. The battle dealt Roosevelt the biggest setback of his political life and forever split the Democratic party. But it also brought the Court and Constitution into the twentieth century. Supreme Power unfolds like a thriller. It reveals why understanding the Court fight is essential to understanding the presidency and legacy of FDR — and to understanding America in our own, contentious times.
Peter Charles Hoffer is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Georgia and coeditor of the series Landmark Law Cases and American Society. Among his other books are The Great New York Conspiracy of 1741: Slavery, Crime, and Colonial Law, The Law’s Conscience: Constitutionalism in America, and Roe v. Wade: The Abortion Rights Controversy in American History, coauthored with N. E. H. Hull.
The distillation of four decades of stellar writing, Professor Hoffer’s newest book, A Nation of Laws: An Introduction to American Legal History, is a wise and illuminating meditation on the key concepts, history, evolution, and importance of American law. He brings the law to life through brief narratives and portraits drawn from the pages of our nation's history. He takes his readers on a tumultuous journey from the Salem witchcraft trials through the divisive debates over slavery; the long struggles for equality and civil rights; the moral and culture wars over abortion, gay rights, and the teaching of evolution; and recent controversies concerning the rule of law in wartime.
